A serious incident took place in Downpatrick, County Down, when a police officer was injured after being struck by a stolen police vehicle. The sequence began shortly before dawn on Sunday at about 04:45 BST, following a vehicle’s failure to stop during a police stop on Fountain Street. Officers later located the suspect vehicle in Ballymote Walk, where a man fled on foot, prompting a foot chase towards Colmcille Road.

Upon returning to their police car during the pursuit, officers discovered another individual behind the wheel of the stolen vehicle. The driver then maneuvered the car directly at the officer. During this confrontation, the officer discharged his firearm, firing one round, but was nonetheless hit by the vehicle. Emergency aid was quickly provided on site by fellow officers and members of the local community before the injured officer was transported by ambulance to hospital. His injuries are described as serious but are not believed to be life-threatening. A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the event.

Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones spoke about the officer’s condition and the incident’s handling: “Urgent medical treatment was provided at the scene by police colleagues, who were also supported by members of the local community.” She confirmed the officer was hospitalized for ongoing treatment. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) reported that the stolen police car, the officer’s weapon, and the ammunition have all been recovered and sent for forensic examination. As is protocol when a police firearm is discharged, the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has been notified and is conducting an independent investigation.

The seriousness of the attack has prompted an attempted murder investigation by detectives from the PSNI’s Serious Crime branch. ACC Jones reflected on the dangers faced by officers: “This would have been a terrifying experience for the officer and also his colleagues – with the clear potential to cause life-changing or even fatal injuries.” Local political representatives have voiced their concern and demanded accountability. Sinn Féin MLA Cathy Mason called for those responsible to be brought to justice, while DUP’s Trevor Clark condemned the assault as “shocking and disgraceful.” Meanwhile, SDLP MLA Colin McGrath emphasized the gravity of the stolen police car incident and called for a comprehensive review to understand how such an event occurred. The Police Ombudsman’s Office confirmed their investigators have been collecting all relevant information, including video footage, to fully assess the circumstances surrounding the incident
