Two additional individuals have been taken into custody in connection with a serious incident that occurred on Sunday in Downpatrick, County Down. During this event, a police officer discharged his firearm and was seriously injured after being struck by a stolen police vehicle. The circumstances have led to ongoing police investigations.

Among the latest arrests, a 36-year-old man faces allegations of attempted murder and aggravated vehicle taking causing injury. Alongside him, a 27-year-old woman has been apprehended on charges of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police. In a related development, Kieran Turley, aged 27, appeared at Downpatrick Magistrates Court. Turley, who lives on Vianstown Road in Downpatrick, was charged with dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and driving an uninsured vehicle. While he was initially suspected of attempted murder, he has been released without charge on that specific offense.

During the court hearing, Turley wore a grey tracksuit and listened as a police officer indicated there was evidence linking him to the allegations. Judge Magill inquired about the status of other arrests, to which the detective responded that the male and female suspects remain in custody, with investigations still active. This inquiry includes the attempted murder aspect, related to the officer being struck by the stolen police vehicle. The court was informed that the dangerous driving occurred on Flying Horse Road and Ardglass Road in the early hours of Sunday morning, involving reckless weaving between lanes. It was also noted that a bottle was thrown from the vehicle at the police. After the car stopped, a suspect fled the scene but was later found hiding in a nearby garden and was in possession of the vehicle’s keys. Bail was denied for Turley, who is scheduled for a further court appearance on 25 June.

The incident started at approximately 04:45 BST on Sunday when a vehicle failed to stop after being signaled by police in the Fountain Street area. The police returned to their station, but other officers later located the car near Ballymote Walk. A man exited the vehicle and was pursued on foot towards Colmcille Road. According to Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones, “As officers returned to their police car, someone was in the driver’s seat – driving erratically and directly towards an officer.” Following this, the officer discharged one round, but was struck by the stolen vehicle, requiring urgent medical aid from colleagues and ambulance staff. The suspect abandoned the car and fled the scene. The entire episode lasted around 45 minutes.

The Police Ombudsman’s Office confirmed their investigators attended the site in keeping with standard procedures. Nikki Davis, director of investigations, stated, “We have been gathering relevant information, including any available video evidence, to assess the circumstances.” She also expressed sympathy: “Our thoughts are with the police officer who has been injured during the incident in Downpatrick and their colleague who was present.” Political leaders have also responded; the Prime Minister conveyed condolences to the injured officer, emphasizing that “Violence against police officers is wholly unacceptable and will never be tolerated.” The PM described the incident as horrific and underscored the importance of protecting those who serve the public and uphold law and order. Brendan Mullan, Chair of the Policing Board, labeled the event “an extremely serious and reckless incident” and noted that the officer survived what was “a life-threatening situation,” highlighting the risks officers face while serving their communities
