British actor Sir Idris Elba has expressed his views regarding the future of the James Bond character, stating that the iconic spy should not be altered to fit a “woke” agenda. He believes that certain audiences worldwide might reject the idea of a black actor portraying 007. Despite longstanding rumors about his potential casting, Sir Idris has previously acknowledged publicly that he was “never in the race” for the role, though he admitted to feeling flattered by the speculation.
Elba emphasized that the character of James Bond was originally crafted in a specific way for a reason. While he appreciates being linked to the role, he suggested that the global appeal of Bond depends on maintaining that established identity. “In realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that,” Elba explained, adding, “Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”
Continuing his thoughts, Sir Idris described Bond as fundamentally escapist entertainment. He cautioned against trying to shift the character to mirror contemporary social movements or to satisfy a global “world’s taste,” saying, “Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke. I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try to answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”
Currently, Elba is starring in the new film Masters of the Universe, playing the role of Man-at-Arms, a character derived from the 1980s cartoon. He humorously pointed out the physical differences between himself and the character, who sports a ginger moustache and green legs. “Talk about recasting,” he joked. “I was a bit conscious about it. But then I was like, ‘What are you talking about?! Man-At-Arms could be any colour! He’s got green legs, for God’s sake!’”
Meanwhile, the search for Daniel Craig’s successor as James Bond officially began recently after years of anticipation. Craig’s last portrayal of 007 was in 2021’s *No Time To Die*. The next Bond movie is set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for *Dune*, with the script written by Steven Knight, creator of *Peaky Blinders*. According to reports, renowned casting director Nina Gold, who has an impressive portfolio including *Star Wars* and *Jurassic Park*, is leading the casting process. Among the rumored contenders for the role are Callum Turner, Henry Cavill, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, though official announcements are yet to be made
