Tina Daheley has revealed that she is stepping down from her role as the newsreader on BBC Radio 2’s breakfast show, ending a remarkable seven-year tenure. This change concludes an 18-year streak of early morning shifts for Daheley, who has delivered the news across various BBC breakfast programs hosted by the likes of Chris Moyles, Nick Grimshaw, Trevor Nelson, and Zoe Ball.

She made the announcement live on air and later shared a heartfelt message on social media, expressing that the position has been one of the “greatest privileges” of her career. Despite leaving the Radio 2 breakfast slot, Daheley confirmed that she will remain part of the station, continuing to cover Jeremy Vine’s lunchtime show as a stand-in when needed.

Reflecting on her extensive career, Daheley noted her beginnings at 1Xtra on Trevor Nelson’s breakfast show before moving through several consecutive breakfast programs over nearly two decades. “After 18 years and six back-to-back breakfast shows (probably a record in there somewhere), I’m looking forward to a lie-in,” she wrote. She also wished luck to Sara Cox and her new team as Cox prepares to take over the breakfast show, mentioning she will be tuning in during her school runs.

The identity of Daheley’s replacement has not yet been confirmed, with Gary Davies currently standing in following Scott Mills’s departure earlier this year. The announcement of Sara Cox taking over the Radio 2 Breakfast Show is set for 6 July, with actor Tom Hanks as her inaugural guest. Daheley’s departure prompted an outpouring of goodwill from colleagues, including Zoe Ball, who praised Daheley as a “class act,” and other broadcasters like Dermot O’Leary, Ellie Brennan, and rapper Wretch 32, all applauding her remarkable contribution to BBC Radio 2
