A train collision near Bedford has resulted in significant casualties, with police reporting that 28 individuals remain hospitalized, nine of whom are in critical condition. The incident occurred at approximately 17:15 BST on Friday, involving two East Midlands Railway (EMR) trains bound for London St Pancras. Unfortunately, the crash claimed the life of one train driver and injured around 100 passengers.

Emergency services responded swiftly, with the East of England Ambulance Service confirming that 11 people sustained very serious injuries, 32 were injured, and 57 suffered minor harm. The British Transport Police (BTP) declared the situation a major incident, taking place just south of Elstow near the A421 and A6 road interchange. As a precaution, all EMR services to and from London St Pancras were suspended over the weekend, with trains operating only up to Bedford station.

Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi of the BTP, speaking near the crash site, emphasized the ongoing investigation and urged the public to avoid speculation. She extended her heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased driver, noting, “The driver’s family, as you would expect, are being supported by specially trained officers at this difficult time.” D’Orsi also praised the efforts of emergency workers and local residents, applauding their “absolutely incredible work in tragic and challenging circumstances” and their “immense kindness” toward passengers and those injured.

Passengers who experienced the collision recounted harrowing scenes. Dr Peter Knapp described the aftermath as feeling “like I’d been in a bomb explosion,” observing “people’s bloodied faces” and broken limbs amid smoke. Similarly, Shola Mene recounted hearing a “big bang” with people thrown from their seats and noted the significant amount of blood and facial injuries. Teresa Itabor, traveling to celebrate her birthday, recalled hitting her head during the impact and witnessing passengers lying injured on the floor afterward.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed deep concern over the crash, pledging a thorough investigation to understand the cause and prevent future incidents. She reassured the public about the safety of UK railways, stating, “The UK railways are some of the safest in the world. It’s very unusual for this to happen on the network.” Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also commented on the tragedy, describing it as “deeply concerning” and sending condolences to the bereaved and those seriously hurt. Meanwhile, EMR has advised passengers to seek alternative travel routes over the weekend, allowing previously purchased tickets to be used on other operators without extra costs
