A tragic accident at the Donegal International Rally has led to the death of a 15-year-old boy named Tadhg Callaghan Carter. The fatal incident took place on Saturday afternoon, shortly before 5 p.m., at Trentagh near Kilmacrennan. Tadhg was hit by a rally car while attending the event. Despite being rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital, he was pronounced dead, leaving the community in shock.
In addition to Tadhg, two other spectators suffered injuries but thankfully, their conditions were not life-threatening. The local Gardaí have appealed to anyone who was present at “Location 15 on Special Stage 12 Gartan” with mobile phone or dashcam footage to come forward to assist in their investigation. The tragic event prompted organizers to cancel the remainder of the three-day rally as a mark of respect.
Tadhg had recently completed his Junior Certificate exams at St Eunan’s College in Letterkenny and was set to start fifth year in September. The school released a statement expressing their profound sorrow and described him as “a deeply valued and popular member of our school community.” The message extended condolences to Tadhg’s family and friends and highlighted the support the school community intends to provide during this difficult time.
Motorsport Ireland and the Donegal Motor Club issued a statement expressing their heartfelt sympathies to Tadhg’s family and requesting privacy. Both Motorsport Ireland and An Garda Síochána are now conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. This marks the first fatality at the Donegal International Rally since 2019, when three-time winner Manus Kelly tragically died. Previous incidents at the rally have also resulted in fatalities, including the deaths of spectators and marshals in earlier years
