Shaun Burton has been identified as the driver who lost his life in the recent train collision near Bedford. British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed that the 60-year-old died as a result of the crash that took place on Friday. His family expressed their profound sorrow, stating, “We are devastated by his loss. Our thoughts are also with those affected by this incident.”

The incident involved two East Midlands Railway (EMR) trains heading to London St Pancras, which collided at 17:15 BST. Approximately 100 people were injured due to the crash, with 28 still hospitalized, including nine who remain in critical condition, according to police reports. BTP extended their sympathies to Shaun Burton’s family as well as his colleagues at East Midlands Railway.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is working closely with British Transport Police to determine the cause of the collision. They anticipate releasing further information in the coming days as investigations and repair efforts continue. Network Rail has announced that the rail line between Bedford and Luton will be closed until 28 June to allow for these processes.

Passengers are being advised by Thameslink to avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary. One witness, Brett Byatt, who was on a train from Bedford to St Pancras at the time of the crash, described the moment of impact, saying that passengers “went flying into one another.” Speaking to BBC Breakfast, he recounted hearing a “boom” followed by “shrieks and groans of pain” immediately after the collision
