Brian Shields once enjoyed hot weather, but his experience has changed drastically since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Now, during the current heatwave, high temperatures can leave him immobilized, significantly impacting his daily life.
He explained how the heat severely affects him, forcing him to seek refuge in shade or air-conditioned spaces to prevent his muscles from weakening. “Before my diagnosis, in weather like this I would have been sitting out sunbathing,” Brian shared. “But now I have to be in the shade, in a cool room, because otherwise the heat really affects my muscles.” He went on to say, “It would mean I wouldn’t be able to lift my arms or lift my legs or do anything, you’re just there, but that’s just the heat that does it, so I just stay out of it.”
Northern Ireland has recently been experiencing unusually high temperatures. On Thursday, Castlederg in County Tyrone recorded the highest temperature of the year so far, reaching around 30C. The region officially entered heatwave conditions on Wednesday after temperatures hit 25C for three consecutive days, meeting the criteria established by the Met Office.
Multiple sclerosis is a neurological condition that impacts the brain and spinal cord, according to the NHS. It causes a wide range of symptoms, including severe fatigue, problems with vision, and muscle cramps, which can all be worsened by heat exposure
