The crocodile enclosure at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo in Cambridgeshire has reopened to visitors, nine days after a serious incident involving a young child. On 18 June, a three-year-old boy was attacked by one or more crocodiles within the Tropical House. Zoo staff quickly intervened and rescued the child from the enclosure. Following the attack, the zoo temporarily closed the Tropical House out of respect for the family but announced via social media that the facility is now fully operational once again.
Authorities have arrested a 30-year-old man from Norfolk in connection with the event. He has been charged on suspicion of attempted murder and subsequently released on bail. Reports indicate the man is not known to the child, has learning disabilities, and had visited the zoo accompanied by carers. The police have confirmed that the young boy, who was visiting with his family from Cambridgeshire, suffered severe injuries while inside the crocodile enclosure. He was treated at the scene before being taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where his condition has since stabilized.
The zoo, located north of Huntingdon in the village of Old Hurst, houses over 100 animals including lions and tigers. Its crocodile facility, established in 2009, includes species such as Nile crocodiles, broad-snouted caiman, and American alligators. These reptiles are contained within a converted barn that features elevated metal fences and walkways for visitor safety. Visitors have expressed support for the zoo on social media, praising it as a cherished destination for families spanning multiple generations.
Chris Newman, director of the National Centre for Reptile Welfare, shared with the BBC that he had spoken to the Johnson family, describing them as deeply shaken but heroic in their efforts during the rescue. He said, “Tracey Johnson, husband Andy and their youngest son were all involved in the rescue. All three were heroes… they’re a close-knit family and they’re still quite shaken by it.” The zoo has declined to provide further comment regarding the reopening following the incident
