The Met Office has extended its amber extreme heat warning as unusually high temperatures persist across parts of the UK. However, cooler conditions are expected to begin arriving by the latter half of the weekend, bringing an end to the ongoing record-breaking heatwave. Despite this impending shift, eastern and south-eastern England will continue to experience very warm weather throughout Saturday.
This extended heat warning covers south-east England and East Anglia and will remain in place until 09:00 BST on Sunday. The region is also expected to face another hot and humid night on Saturday, maintaining the discomfort caused by the intense heat. On Saturday morning, many areas reported temperatures in the mid to high teens Celsius, though eastern England stayed warmer with readings around 20C, accompanied by some overnight thunderstorms.
A change in weather patterns is underway as the high pressure system responsible for the prolonged sunshine and heat begins to move eastward. Simultaneously, a low pressure system located northwest of the UK is ushering in weather fronts from the Atlantic. Winds shifting from southerly to westerly will help usher in cooler air. Meanwhile, Scotland will experience a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, some heavy and locally thundery, and Northern Ireland will see showery rain with occasional sunny intervals. Temperatures in northern and western parts of the UK are expected to peak in the low twenties Celsius, while central, eastern, and south-east England remain hotter with afternoon highs in the high twenties to low thirties. These areas will also have lighter winds and more intense sunshine, raising the potential for isolated thunderstorms.
The heatwave is forecasted to conclude on Sunday as weather fronts continue to move east, accompanied by south-westerly winds that bring cloud and scattered showers across the UK. Some showers may be heavy, particularly in southern England. With these changes, cooler air will spread, bringing mid to high teens Celsius temperatures to Scotland and Northern Ireland, with eastern Scotland possibly seeing temperatures rise to the low twenties. England and Wales will experience warmer conditions, generally in the low twenties, and the extreme heat affecting the east and south-east will ease, with temperatures in these areas dropping to the mid-twenties Celsius—though East Anglia could still reach around 27C
