A group of primary school children from St Gregory Primary School in Sudbury, Suffolk, experienced an unforgettable surprise during a school trip to London. What began as a routine outing quickly transformed into an extraordinary encounter when the students found themselves at the Moana Experience event, organized to promote the forthcoming live-action adaptation of the popular 2016 film Moana. The highlight of the day was an unexpected opportunity for the Years 3 and 4 pupils to meet Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who stars as Maui in the movie.

The special event took place at Potters Field Park, near the River Thames, and was arranged through a collaboration between Disney and the school’s headteacher, Daniel Woodrow. Earlier in the year, the pupils had created a social media video with the hope of catching The Rock’s attention. Woodrow promised the children that if he noticed their clip, they would be treated to a special screening of the new Moana film as their end-of-year trip. The video quickly went viral, capturing the actor’s interest. Johnson responded by sending a personal video message in which he promised to rent out a cinema for the students and their families to view the film together, even offering to cover snacks and sweets.

At the event, The Rock spent quality time with the pupils, greeting them warmly and engaging with the excited children. He described their reaction by saying, “It was awesome [to meet them] and they were losing their minds and going bonkers and going crazy. That’s the fun part of fame and the best part of fame. This kind of stuff is important.” Headteacher Daniel Woodrow shared his amazement at the experience, noting how significant it was for such a globally renowned star to interact personally with the children. “For the biggest movie star on the planet to spend so much time with the children… that was incredible, and you could see how excited they were,” he said.

Beyond meeting The Rock and other cast members, the students had the chance to immerse themselves in a recreated Motunui paradise, complete with Moana-themed food and drinks. They also explored detailed props, including a life-sized replica of Maui’s six-meter-long hook and a stunning re-creation of Moana’s canoe. The pupils even gifted The Rock a collage featuring their drawings of his character, Maui. One of the children reflected on the experience, saying, “It was the best day ever. All of us were all really excited and some of us got high fives from him, and he made sure we all enjoyed the time [with him]. When he came round the corner we were speechless and, like, ‘Is that actually Dwayne Johnson?
