A signed copy of *Paul McCartney In His Own Words*, a collection featuring interviews with the legendary Beatles member, recently sold for just under £1,000. The volume had been donated to an Oxfam charity shop located in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion. Included as part of a broader assortment of 1970s memorabilia, the book remained on the shop’s shelves for several months before its unique inscription was noticed by the store manager, Joan Randle.
Joan Randle shared her experience, explaining that the book was one of many items she had initially planned to use for a window display. “I’d been planning to use some of the items in a fun window display, so it wasn’t something we’d paid particular attention to at first,” she said. With some spare time, Randle decided to carefully look through the pile and came across the signed book towards the end of her search. She described the moment when she saw Paul McCartney’s signature as one of the best experiences in her decade working at the shop. The autograph, written inside the front cover in black ballpoint pen, reads: “All the best! to ye!” Despite efforts, the charity has not been able to identify the original donor.
The copy of the book was auctioned through Bonhams, and the sale raised £950, which was donated to Oxfam. An Oxfam spokesperson emphasized the importance of such contributions, highlighting that every item donated supports the charity’s work worldwide, especially in times of crisis. “Whether it’s a signed collectible, a well-loved book or an everyday item, every donation and every sale helps us stand with people when they need it most,” the spokesperson remarked. The proceeds from this particular sale will aid ongoing emergency responses, such as relief efforts following the recent earthquake in Venezuela.
The Beatles’ enduring influence stretches back to the formation of the band during the late 1950s. It began in 1957 when John Lennon founded the Quarrymen, soon joined by Paul McCartney. The band evolved over the next few years, eventually including George Harrison on guitar and Ringo Starr on drums, and was renamed The Beatles. The group achieved considerable success, releasing their first UK number one single, *From Me To You*, in 1963. Over time, they topped the UK charts 17 times and, notably, secured the top five spots on the US Billboard chart for one week in April 1964, a feat never before accomplished. Today, after nearly seven decades, The Beatles remain one of the most popular and influential music groups globally
