A former police officer has been sentenced to a decade in prison after being found guilty of rape and sustained abuse against multiple women. Cameron Ross committed the assaults in two different locations: Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis during 2012 and 2014, and in Inverness between 2019 and 2022. The 39-year-old was suspended from Police Scotland in June 2022 following the initial reports and subsequently resigned last month.
During the trial held at the High Court in Edinburgh, Ross maintained his innocence, but the jury ultimately convicted him in May. Judge Alison Stirling emphasized the gravity of the offenses, asserting that imprisonment served purposes of punishment, deterrence, and societal condemnation. “It is also to show society’s concern and disapproval for your offending,” she stated directly to Ross.
Police Scotland’s head of professional standards, Chief Superintendent Helen Harrison, expressed that the force collaborated closely with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service to secure the conviction. She highlighted that Ross was a serving officer when the allegations surfaced, and upon receiving the complaint in June 2022, the force immediately suspended him. “If he had remained, we would have progressed gross misconduct proceedings and he would have been dismissed as his actions and behaviour will not be tolerated in Police Scotland,” Harrison added, while also acknowledging the courage of the victims who came forward.
The court was presented with distressing details of Ross’s offenses. Evidence included testimony from the first victim describing how Ross “pinned her down to a bed” during an attack after meeting at a party between August and October 2012. Another woman recounted a later attack in 2014 where Ross restrained and raped her. The third victim endured ongoing abuse from October 2019 to June 2022 in Inverness, where Ross threatened her life, physically assaulted her, and wielded a knife. Additionally, Ross was found guilty of threatening and abusive behavior in June 2022 and attempting to obstruct justice by trying to contact a witness involved in the case.
Though the allegations were publicly revealed in January 2024, Police Scotland had been aware since mid-2022, when Ross was arrested and charged. Following his conviction, Ross has been placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely. Faye Cook of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service described Ross’s crimes as “deliberate and repeated acts of abuse against women over the course of a decade,” stressing the breach of trust represented by his actions. Cook encouraged other victims of similar crimes to report offenses and reiterated the Crown’s dedication to prosecuting sexual and domestic abuse irrespective of the perpetrator’s identity
