An internet and phone outage affecting approximately 3,000 customers in Maghull, Merseyside, has persisted for a third consecutive day, prompting strong criticism from a local MP. The disruption was caused by suspected accidental damage to underground network infrastructure during sewer repair works carried out by contractors on Hall Lane. Broadband provider Openreach confirmed that the excavation led to “significant damage” to its cables, resulting in the extended blackout.

Bill Esterson, the Labour MP representing Sefton Central, expressed his dissatisfaction with the response from Openreach. He highlighted the severity of losing internet access in today’s society and described the company’s handling of the incident as inadequate. “It is really serious to be without the internet in modern society,” Esterson remarked. “Normally these problems get fixed within a few hours not days.”

Openreach indicated that, if repairs proceed smoothly, services would be restored by early Saturday evening. However, since the disruption began at approximately 1:00 pm BST on Thursday, residents and businesses alike have been grappling with a lack of both internet connectivity and landline phone access. Among those affected is Meadows Pharmacy on Liverpool Road South, located near the site of the damage. Employee Joy Sinnott described the situation as chaotic.

The pharmacy has been forced to operate without a functioning phone line, rely on only one computer, and manage without card payment facilities during the outage. “It is crazy just how much everything depends on the internet,” Sinnott commented, underscoring the widespread impact that the ongoing disruption has had on daily life and business operations in the affected area
