King Charles has extended his “warmest congratulations” to the United States as it marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In a message directed to President Donald Trump, the King highlighted 2026 as a “truly historic milestone and a moment of great celebration for Americans everywhere.”

The monarch reflected on the longstanding relationship between the UK and the US, describing it as one of “extraordinary evolution.” He emphasized that the anniversary presents an opportunity to “pause and reflect on the remarkable journey” of the United States over the past two and a half centuries. King Charles expressed confidence that the bond between the two peoples would continue to strengthen in the years ahead.

In his message, the King acknowledged that despite past conflicts, the US and the UK have developed “one of the closest and most productive alliances the world has seen.” He noted that through “centuries of shared challenge and achievement,” the partnership is grounded in friendship, trust, and a mutual commitment to liberty, the rule of law, and human dignity. The alliance, he explained, is comprehensive, extending across defence and security, commerce, science, education, culture, and the arts.

King Charles also mentioned his personal experience of the “enduring bond between our countries,” which he witnessed during his state visit to Washington DC in May. Additionally, he underlined a shared duty to protect the environment, pointing out that decisions made now concerning the natural world will influence the future prosperity and security of both nations.

The Declaration of Independence, ratified in 1776, formally established the United States as independent from British colonial rule, and its anniversary is celebrated annually on July 4th. President Trump is expected to attend celebrations in Washington DC, including aerial flyovers and a fireworks display. He has promised that this year’s Fourth of July fireworks show, which is scheduled to follow his remarks, will be the “largest fireworks show in history.”

Across the country, various festivities are also underway. In New York’s Times Square, the iconic ball will drop eight times to mark midnight across all US time zones. Meanwhile, Philadelphia — the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed at Independence Hall 250 years ago — will host a concert featuring performers such as Christina Aguilera to commemorate the milestone
