A man from Northampton has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of the rape and murder of his estranged wife, whom he attempted to make appear as though she had died by suicide. Michael Thompson, aged 56, did not attend Nottingham Crown Court for his sentencing hearing. The incident occurred at their residence on Pinewood Road, Northampton, last August, when Thompson took the life of Kimberley Thompson, 43.
Judge Nirmal Shant KC handed down a sentence that includes a minimum term of 33 years, condemning Thompson for displaying an “ultimate act of cowardice and contempt” by refusing to be present at his sentencing. The couple had been married for 19 years and had two children but were separated with divorce proceedings underway at the time of Kimberley’s death. Kimberley was well-known for her involvement in basketball as both a player and coach at Northampton Basketball Club, where she was remembered as dedicated, positive, and inspiring to young players. Martin Spencer from the club said she was someone who “encouraged other children to do their best in the game and to develop their talent.”
In addition to the murder charge, Thompson was found guilty of two counts of perverting the course of justice. Evidence presented at Nottingham Crown Court revealed a history of domestic abuse spanning several years, including controlling and coercive behavior, alongside physical violence. Thompson had recorded hundreds of hours involving Kimberley prior to suffocating her at their home in the early hours of 9 August. During the trial that lasted six weeks, Thompson claimed that they had consensual sex before he discovered her unresponsive, surrounded by tablets and alcohol bottles. However, post-mortem tests found no alcohol in her system, only minimal amounts of caffeine, paracetamol, and codeine. Police were alerted after Kimberley’s family and friends expressed doubts about the suicide narrative and disclosed a background of abuse, prompting a full murder investigation.
At sentencing, Judge Shant remarked on Thompson’s lack of remorse throughout the proceedings, noting his gestures of dissent and refusal to attend the court to face Kimberley’s family. The couple’s daughter, Athena, appeared remotely from the US to address the court, describing her father as a “jealous, conniving, narcissistic villain.” She expressed her heartbreak, stating that the killing also destroyed her and condemned Thompson’s actions as evil and selfish. Athena vowed to honor her mother’s memory despite the painful experience. Prosecutors revealed that Kimberley had begun a new relationship and planned to leave Thompson, seeking approximately £65,000 in divorce settlement payments. Suspicion was raised by Kimberley’s social media posts early on the day of her death, which contained spelling mistakes uncharacteristic of her usual style.
Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, highlighted the severity of the abuse Kimberley endured over nearly two decades and commended her loved ones for their dignity during the investigation and trial. She emphasized the importance of support for others facing domestic abuse situations. Emma Cornell from the Crown Prosecution Service described the trial as exposing Thompson’s “cowardice and lies” after years of sustained abuse and expressed hope that the sentencing would bring Justice for Kimberley and her family
