A tragic incident occurred at Seaton Carew beach in Hartlepool when two men lost their lives while attempting to assist two children struggling in the sea. One of the men, locally identified as Wayne Taylor, and another individual were rescued by the RNLI around 15:45 BST on Sunday, but sadly both men were pronounced dead shortly after being brought ashore. The children involved were taken to hospital as a precaution and have been confirmed to be safe.

Although police have not formally identified the men, Cleveland Police continue their investigations in support of the coroner’s inquiries. The heartbreaking event has deeply affected the local community. Jonathan Brash, the Labour MP for Hartlepool, described the deaths as “a heartbreaking tragedy” for the town, highlighting the profound impact on residents.

In response to the incident, Hartlepool Borough Council leader Graham Harrison, representing Reform UK, requested a comprehensive review of the water safety measures in place at Seaton Carew and along nearby coastlines. Currently, lifeguard coverage at the beach is limited to the summer school holiday period, which has not yet begun. Independent councillor Sue Little has advocated for extending lifeguard services from May through to the end of September, and her petition to prolong coverage beyond the school holidays has garnered over 1,600 signatures.

Emergency services including the Hartlepool, Redcar, and Staithes Coastguard Rescue Teams, North East Ambulance Service, and police were in attendance during the rescue effort. Davey Short, a bystander who witnessed the incident, recounted how he managed to pull one of the children, a boy, to safety on his second attempt. Speaking about the rescue, he said, “I realised something was not right because there was a woman screaming and shouting. I ran straight in and dived into the water, I got a bit scared myself and came back in a way to get my bearings.” He expressed remorse over not being able to do more but affirmed his willingness to help again, adding, “I would do it again if I had to, I’m a dad with kids of my own.”
