Phil, a local worker, describes the steelworks as “a mucky place and hard work,” but acknowledges that the industry has provided steady employment for numerous people in the area over a long period.

The UK government assumed control of British Steel’s Scunthorpe operations last year, even though ownership remains with China’s Jingye Group. This move towards nationalisation offers the government greater authority to shape the future of the plant and ensures the continuation of its blast furnace activities.

While Phil appreciates this intervention, he remains cautious about the long-term viability of the steelworks. He expresses concern about how the industry will maintain profitability given the competition from cheaper imported steel.

Highlighting the drastic decline in employment, Phil notes that in the early 1970s, the workforce at the steelworks numbered around 22,000 but has now dropped to fewer than 3,000. Nevertheless, many others in surrounding businesses and the local supply chain continue to depend on the plant’s operations
