In Cambridge, an emotional vigil drew over 200 people coming together to honor the memory of Jason Arday. Arday, once a professor at Cambridge, was found deceased at a residence in Battersea, south London, on a Friday afternoon. The 41-year-old had stepped down from his role as a professor of sociology of education amid allegations concerning plagiarism and scrutiny over some of his accomplishments. Despite his denial of these accusations, his family has expressed that the “campaign of misinformation” surrounding him became overwhelming.
The gathering was organised by Arday’s postdoctoral students and took place on Sunday afternoon. Shahnaaz Khan, a PhD student from the Faculty of Education, addressed those present, urging them to connect with others around them and share in their collective grief, saying, “Look around you today, talk to someone you don’t know and hold their pain with yours.” She further emphasized unity and strength in their community, stating, “Hold your friends close and know that we stand strong because we stand together.” Khan described the day as one to celebrate Arday’s life, postponing anger for a later time, and highlighted the determination to “seek justice” on his behalf.
Public figures have reacted to Arday’s passing with condolences and calls for reflection. Andy Burnham called the situation “a tragedy on so many levels” and urged a pause away from quick judgments, emphasizing the importance of understanding “how things came to this.” Speaking during a visit to Cornwall, he described the moment as one for thoughtful contemplation. Likewise, Education Secretary Lucy Powell conveyed her deep shock and sadness and reminded the public to acknowledge “there are real people with loved ones involved” in the aftermath of this loss.
Plans are in place for additional vigils to honor Jason Arday, scheduled to be held in Cambridge and London on Monday evening. These events continue to provide a space for those affected to come together in remembrance and solidarity
