Authorities have scheduled post-mortem examinations for five teenage boys who tragically lost their lives in a head-on collision on a motorway in County Kildare. The crash occurred when the car transporting the teenagers was driving against the flow of traffic on the motorway and collided with another vehicle.

In the second car involved, three women—two in their 30s and one in her 20s—as well as a young boy, were seriously injured and subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment. The collision took place in the early hours, around 3 a.m. local time, between junctions 3 and 4 on the M9 motorway near Moone.

Investigations revealed that the teenagers’ vehicle was traveling southbound on the northbound carriageway when the impact happened. Gardaí have confirmed that there was no police pursuit underway at the time of the crash. Meanwhile, the Garda Ombudsman, Fiosrú, is conducting an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Forensic teams have concluded their work at the scene, and Gardaí have called on anyone who witnessed the collision or was driving on that section of the motorway to come forward with information. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly commented on the incident, emphasizing that the injured were “family members” who were “travelling innocently” when struck by the wrong-way vehicle
