A photography exhibition is set to take place at a launderette in Liverpool, showcasing the unique charm of the establishment through never-before-seen images captured by its users and neighbors. Kitty’s Launderette, located just 500 yards from Liverpool FC’s Anfield stadium, will host the exhibition titled Kitty’s After Dark in collaboration with the People of Anfield project.
People of Anfield was a residency program commissioned by Culture Liverpool and Open Eye Gallery, culminating in an exhibition called The Flowers Still Grow. The new display at Kitty’s courtyard will mirror aspects of the original exhibition while introducing fresh pieces to the collection. The launderette, a community cooperative aimed at addressing hygiene poverty and social isolation, will showcase Kitty’s After Dark by Kayleigh Walmsley, highlighting the interplay of space, light, and community within its intimate setting.
Kayleigh, an Events Lead & Laundry Co-op Worker at Kitty’s, discovered her passion for photography after becoming a mother to her daughter Edie. Inspired by motherhood, Kayleigh pursued photography studies at Liverpool College and went on to develop her skills further through projects like Kitty’s After Dark. Named in honor of Kitty Wilkinson, an Irish immigrant credited with pioneering the UK wash house movement, Kitty’s served as a central hub for the People of Anfield project, hosting creative workshops and collaborations with local residents and artists.
Residents are encouraged to attend the launch event at Kitty’s Launderette on Friday, June 13th, from 6-9pm to experience the exhibition firsthand. Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Health, and Wellbeing, Councillor Harry Doyle, expressed enthusiasm for the project, recognizing Kitty’s as more than just a cleaning facility but a social space that embodies the ethos of Creative Neighbourhoods. Photographer Kayleigh Walmsley shared her creative process, emphasizing the use of space and lighting to evoke a mysterious and inspiring atmosphere in her photographs
