A captivating new exhibition is set to open at Liverpool Central Library, shedding light on the experiences of Ukrainian refugees who found solace in Merseyside after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Titled ‘Ukrainian Stories and the Merseyside Connection’, this free public exhibition will run from Tuesday 17 to Wednesday 25 June, showcasing the stories of Ukrainians who fled the war and established new lives in the Liverpool City Region. The exhibition will also emphasize the crucial role played by host families, community volunteers, and local organizations in offering support and hospitality.

Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and crafted by Whispered Tales, an arts organization based in Liverpool, these narratives will be permanently archived in the Liverpool Record Office’s digital collection, preserving a significant chapter in the city’s social history. At the Central Library, visitors can expect to see a depiction of Ukrainian-style apartment blocks in the main atrium. Additionally, a large screen built into one of the towers will feature short films of Ukrainians sharing their personal stories of displacement, loss, hope, and belonging.

The exhibition delves into the harsh realities of forced migration while celebrating the empathy, unity, and resilience that characterizes Liverpool’s history as a City of Sanctuary. Liverpool is currently serving as a home to numerous Ukrainian individuals and families who have arrived through the Homes for Ukraine program. Since March 2022, Liverpool City Council has collaborated closely with partners across the region to offer housing, employment, education, and wellbeing assistance to the newcomers. This initiative is an extension of the city’s broader support for Ukraine, demonstrated when Liverpool hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023 on behalf of Ukraine, showcasing Ukrainian culture through various events and community projects.

The exhibition is part of a broader commitment to amplifying refugee voices and ensuring they are heard, honored, and preserved. Visitors can catch this impactful exhibition at Liverpool Central Library from 17 to 25 June, offering a profound insight into the resilience of the Ukrainian community and the warmth of the Merseyside populace who welcomed them with open arms
