From Rice Lane pub to childcare success, a journey of growth for a Walton business

A family-operated childcare nursery in North Liverpool has successfully converted a former pub into a flourishing local business, propelled by expert support that facilitated its bold growth. Bonnie Bear Nursery, established by Hayley and Charlie Murtagh, provides a caring and stimulating environment designed for children aged from 12 weeks up to five years old. The nursery emphasizes a warm, home-like atmosphere where young children can flourish.

Liverpool City Council’s Business Support Service played a crucial role in Bonnie Bear’s development, offering specialized guidance at a pivotal time. This assistance included help with grant applications, refining the business plan, and boosting overall confidence. As a result, the Murtaghs were able to turn their family dream into a sustainable and expanding childcare enterprise. The initial idea was born during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Hayley and Charlie noticed the Plough pub on Rice Lane was available. “We walked into the building and I just said, ‘I can see this as a nursery’,” recalls Hayley. After extensive renovations and overcoming numerous challenges, the nursery officially opened in March 2021
