Liverpool Experience Campus (LEX) is set to back a significant public health initiative this June, coordinated alongside BSG LIVE 2026, the annual flagship conference hosted by The British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), scheduled from 22 to 25 June. This collaboration brings together key partners including BSG, the British Liver Trust, Liverpool Convention Bureau, and Liverpool City Council’s Public Health team, all united through LEX’s Legacy Strategy to ensure that the event delivers lasting advantages for the Liverpool City Region beyond the conference dates.
Liver disease ranks as the third leading cause of premature mortality in the UK, with about 90% of cases being preventable. Alcohol-related liver disease, in particular, continues to rise among individuals younger than 75. Often, this condition progresses silently without symptoms until reaching an advanced stage. To address this, the legacy programme will offer free FibroScan liver health checks to residents of Liverpool during BSG LIVE 2026. These quick, non-invasive scans can detect early indicators of liver disease, providing a crucial window for timely intervention, treatment, and lifestyle guidance.
In addition to health screenings, the public engagement programme will feature “Colin the Colon,” an interactive inflatable display from Guts UK. Positioned at Metquarter Liverpool on 21 June, this exhibit aims to break down communication barriers and educate people of all ages about digestive health in an engaging and accessible way, further extending the conference’s impact into the local community. This initiative exemplifies both the BSG’s dedication to prevention and early diagnosis and LEX’s mission to utilize events to enhance lives.
Spokespersons emphasized the importance of this collaboration. A British Society of Gastroenterology representative stated: “The BSG is delighted to be helping to create a legacy that will last well beyond our conference. This initiative reflects our wider commitment to improving digestive health through prevention, early diagnosis and public engagement.” Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, Cllr Harry Doyle, highlighted the value of accessible liver checks in reducing harm and health inequalities within the city. Professor Matt Ashton, Liverpool’s Director of Public Health, noted the critical nature of early detection and its alignment with the city’s Alcohol Strategy, focusing on prevention and timely support. Meanwhile, Adrian Evans, Director of Sales for Conference & Business Events at LEX, underscored the goal of leaving a meaningful health legacy by engaging the community through such initiatives.
