Jenny, my daughter who sadly passed away at the age of 46 due to cancer, was an exceptionally talented writer and communicator. Her professional journey began in the civil service and took her through roles at 10 Downing Street before she eventually became the director of external relations at the United Nations Foundation in New York, a position she held until shortly before her death.
Her career started at the Department for Education, where she served as an assistant private secretary to three different schools ministers: Stephen Twigg, Jacqui Smith, and Jim Knight. She then advanced to become a speechwriter for the junior education minister, Lord Adonis, between 2006 and 2007. Jenny later transitioned to the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, where she took on the roles of head of digital engagement and senior speechwriter for both the science and innovation minister Ian Pearson and the secretary of state for innovation, university and skills, John Denham.
Between 2011 and 2013, Jenny worked as the news and content manager at the prime minister’s office, overseeing the management of the No 10 website and its Twitter account. Her affection for New York grew during visits to the city, which eventually led her to leave the civil service in April 2013. She then accepted a communications specialist role at the United Nations before moving to the United Nations Foundation in 2017, where she traveled extensively across Africa and South America.
Born in Liverpool, Jenny was educated at Rainhill High School before earning both a BA (2001) and an MA (2002) in English literature from King’s College London. Together with her British partner, Guy Oldfield, she made New York her home. They married in 2015 and settled in Morningside Heights on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. There, she built a new circle of friends, while maintaining close ties with those in the UK. In 2017, Jenny and Guy welcomed their son, Levon. Despite her ambitious nature, Jenny was known for her warmth, charisma, humor, and community spirit. Even during her illness, she volunteered at the Gatehouse Community Garden and supported the housing co-op where she lived. Jenny is survived by Guy, their son Levon, her siblings Claire and Andrew, and me. Her mother, Julia (née Boyle), passed away in 2013
