Hull adventurer Karl Bushby ‘overwhelmed’ at Humber Bridge crowds

The adventurer revealed that the chance to begin his extensive journey arose following the end of his marriage, which coincided with his wife moving back to Northern Ireland with their son. This pivotal life event seemingly set him on the path to undertake the remarkable walk.

Reflecting on the early stages of his trek, he recalled, “When I left home and I walked down south first of all to test the machine that I first had, I don’t remember any of that journey except for the Humber Bridge.” He described the bridge’s appearance as almost mystical, emphasizing how the other side of the river remained hidden from view. To him, the Humber Bridge held a deeply symbolic meaning and always stood out as a significant landmark.

Beginning his epic expedition at the age of 29, he started from Punta Arenas, Chile, equipped with only a few hundred dollars. From there, he set off heading north, aiming to make his way back home on foot. Over the years, the journey took him across four continents, exposing him to a variety of challenging environments including deserts, mountains, jungles, and even a frozen sea.

By the time he completed the adventure and swam across the English Channel on October 5, he was 57 years old. This incredible feat marked the end of a long and arduous journey that tested his endurance and determination across some of the most demanding terrains on the planet
