Essex journalist becomes surprise kidney donor for teen

Emma Palmer, a journalist from Essex, initially planned to write about a kidney donor appeal for a young girl but ended up becoming the donor herself. The 51-year-old features writer for the Echo in Essex was contacted by the mother of the child in March 2025 to cover the appeal, but during the process, it was discovered that she was a compatible match.

The recipient, 16-year-old Maya from Hadleigh in south Essex, underwent a kidney transplant on 6 January. Maya’s kidneys had suffered severe damage as a result of an E. coli infection she had two years prior. Emma, who lives in Laindon near Basildon, said that nine weeks after donating her kidney, she felt “totally normal” and hoped her experience would encourage others to begin considering kidney donation.

Emma explained that one motivating factor for her decision was her empathy for Maya’s mother, Maria. “One of the reasons I wanted to do this was for Maria (Maya’s mother) because as a mother myself I could only imagine what she was going through,” Emma said. She further emphasized the difficulties of life on dialysis, describing it as “horrendous” and expressing her desire to help alleviate that burden.

Maria, a 48-year-old executive assistant at a local charity, expressed deep gratitude toward Emma. “I can say thank you to Emma but it will never be enough,” she said. Maria added that they would remain in contact, especially on 6 January each year, the date of Maya’s transplant. Maya, who is a keen musician, credited Emma with saving her life and inspiring her. “Not only has Emma given me a life but she has made me want to live it,” Maya said. NHS data notes that for those with a living donor, the wait for a kidney transplant typically ranges from three to six months, though the time can vary based on factors such as blood type and tissue compatibility, with longer waits often experienced by people from black and South Asian backgrounds
