Zack Polanksi: I want to hold balance of power at next general election

Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, recently revealed to the BBC that he has contemplated the idea of becoming prime minister after facing numerous questions about it during media interviews. While initially downplaying the prospect as not his immediate goal, Polanski acknowledged that the notion frequently occupies his thoughts. His primary ambitions remain focused on implementing policies such as a wealth tax, tackling climate change, and introducing proportional representation.

In a conversation on the BBC’s Political Thinking podcast with Nick Robinson, Polanski expressed his desire for the Greens to reach a stage where they could hold the balance of power in a hung parliament. He aims to increase his party’s representation in Parliament beyond his earlier target of 30 to 40 MPs, describing that goal as now “under ambitious.” Polanski hopes to attract politically engaged individuals who feel alienated by traditional party politics, encouraging them to find a voice under his leadership.

Polanski recently outlined his vision for the UK economy, advocating for a major overhaul of what he describes as the country’s “failing fiscal rules.” He proposes the creation of a new expert panel to assess the sustainability of national debt, aiming to break free from what he calls the “bond market doom loop.” He argued that the accumulation of wealth by the richest segments of society reduces liquidity for public services and deepens economic inequality, which he sees as the root cause of many societal issues. His economic plans also include substantial financial support for households facing rising energy costs due to geopolitical tensions, alongside policies such as rent control and nationalising water companies.

When questioned about financing these ideas, including whether they would involve borrowing or printing money, Polanski stressed the importance of careful consideration regarding a Green investment budget. He distinguished his approach from that of previous political leaders by emphasizing borrowing for productive investments in infrastructure, education, and healthcare, rather than for unfunded tax cuts. Additionally, Polanski highlighted problems in current government planning, explaining that short-term fiscal strategies contribute to instability in bond markets. He insisted that a Green government would promote long-term planning and certainty, which are key factors for market confidence.

Polanski has been candid about his later entry into politics and his prior affiliation with the Liberal Democrats, during which time he supported austerity based on a misunderstanding of national finances. He now rejects that view, seeing political engagement and helping people find their political voice as his foremost priorities.
