Iain Wares, an 86-year-old former teacher, has been convicted in South Africa of indecent assault involving a former pupil. This case is separate from multiple allegations of historical sexual abuse that he faces in Scotland. Wares taught at Edinburgh Academy and Fettes College during the 1960s and 1970s, and many former pupils, including BBC presenter Nicky Campbell, have accused him of abuse.
Currently residing in Cape Town, Wares was previously ruled by a South African high court eligible for extradition to Scotland, where he is wanted for numerous charges relating to sexual abuse. However, the extradition process has faced delays as Scottish authorities submitted additional charges against him. Meanwhile, a Cape Town court found him guilty of indecent assault based on accusations from a former student dating back to the 1980s.
The sentencing for this South African conviction is scheduled for 13 May. Meanwhile, efforts to bring Wares to trial in Scotland continue. Prosecutors from Scotland initially sought his extradition in 2018, prompting his arrest in 2019 on multiple counts of lewd and indecent conduct. A Cape Town High Court ruling in 2024 endorsed extradition on three charges, but the legal proceedings have slowed as more charges have been added.
Wares was arrested in October last year under a UK extradition warrant but was granted bail. His upcoming hearing is set for 16 April. South Africa’s national prosecuting authority has detailed the new charges from Scotland, which include 60 counts of sexual assault, four counts of rape, and 25 counts of assault.
