Murdered UWE student Jamie Collins was 'bright' and 'kind'

The family of Jamie Collins, a university student who recently died from multiple stab wounds, have spoken about him as a “bright” and “unassuming young man” with his entire future ahead of him. They remembered Collins as a “gentle” and “kind” person who was eagerly anticipating completing his studies at the University of the West of England (UWE) and returning home to Swansea in a few weeks.

Collins, 21, was found deceased in a garden, and the police subsequently arrested a fellow student and housemate, 23-year-old Zack Coughlan, on Sunday. Coughlan has since been charged with murder and appeared earlier at Bristol Crown Court. The case continues to move forward with Coughlan scheduled to appear again at Bristol Crown Court on 19 June, and a provisional trial date has been set for 12 October.

In a statement, Collins’ family expressed the difficulty of their loss, saying, “Words cannot describe how we are feeling as a family right now.” They also highlighted Jamie’s promising path in his chosen field of engineering and robotics, noting, “We know he was heading for a hugely successful future following his engineering and robotics degree.” Despite their pain, the family has found solace in the overwhelming support shown by friends and others.

The University of the West of England expressed their shock at the tragic news, acknowledging Collins as an “active member of student societies.” The institution described the circumstances surrounding his death as deeply distressing, emphasizing the impact on the university community.
