A former synagogue located in East London was the target of an arson attack, prompting charges against a man involved. Moses Edwards, aged 45 and residing in Wanstead, faces a charge of arson with intent to endanger life. The incident occurred on 5 May at the East London Central Synagogue building in Whitechapel. Edwards is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later today.
The fire services and Metropolitan Police responded swiftly to the scene at 05:16 BST. The fire resulted in only minor damage to a gate and lock at the building’s entrance, and fortunately, no injuries were reported. The building itself had ceased functioning as a synagogue in 2020, marking a significant change in its use.
Police have revealed that the synagogue property is currently in the process of being sold to a local Somali Muslim organization. This transition marks a new chapter for the building, though recent events have caused concern.
Additionally, as part of the ongoing investigation led by Counter Terrorism Policing London, a 52-year-old woman was arrested on 10 May. She has since been released on bail, with a return date scheduled for August. The inquiry remains active as authorities continue to look into the circumstances of the arson
