Three boys, aged 9, 12, and 13, were taken into custody following reports of disturbances involving masked youths in Londonderry. According to authorities, these youths allegedly attacked a bus stop with petrol bombs and threw stones at passing vehicles. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. BST on Sunday night in the Glengalliagh Road area.
Police responded to calls about the youths not only throwing stones but also blocking the road with pallets set ablaze. The three children were detained, cautioned, and then handed over to their parents. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) stated that the boys will be referred to a youth diversion officer for further action.
Chief Inspector Cherith Craig expressed disappointment over the involvement of young people in such activities. She emphasized that “it is really disappointing to see young people involved in this type of behaviour,” adding that the conduct does not reflect the community of Galliagh, which does not support these reckless actions. Law enforcement officials are reviewing video footage as part of the ongoing investigation and have requested that anyone with relevant information come forward.
In a separate event on Friday evening, two youths were assaulted in Derry city centre. Police reported receiving multiple calls regarding assaults in the Waterloo Place area at around 7:50 p.m. BST, following a large gathering of young people nearby on Foyle Street. One youth suffered serious injuries after being hit with a bottle and was treated in hospital, though the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Another youth was also attacked but did not sustain injuries. A 33-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of common assault and has been charged; she is due to appear before Londonderry Magistrates’ Court next month. Authorities have appealed to anyone present at the scene who may have captured footage on mobile phones or dash cams to assist with their inquiries
