Manchester United’s young talent Tyler Fletcher has been called up to replace the injured Billy Gilmour in Scotland’s squad for the World Cup. Fletcher, only 19 years old, earned his first international cap as a substitute during Scotland’s 4-1 friendly victory over Curacao at Hampden Park on Saturday. Tyler Fletcher, the son of former Scotland captain Darren Fletcher, has surprisingly clocked more playing time for the national team than he has for his club this season, having made two substitute appearances for Manchester United. Interestingly, his twin brother Jack has opted to represent England rather than Scotland. In response to Gilmour’s unfortunate injury, Clarke mentioned other potential reinforcements such as Connor Barron from Rangers, Andy Irving of Sparta Prague, and Lennon Miller from Udinese. Clarke expressed his sadness over Gilmour’s situation, calling him “an integral part of our World Cup qualifying campaign” and lamenting the timing as “so, so cruel.” Despite the disappointment, Clarke remains optimistic about Gilmour’s future, believing he has multiple major tournaments ahead. Napoli teammate Scott McTominay also showed support, sharing a heartfelt message on Instagram expressing his devastation and encouragement for Gilmour.
Reflecting on Fletcher’s performance against Curacao, Clarke told BBC Scotland that the youngster impressed both the players and coaching staff, justifying his decision to bring him on at halftime. Kenny McLean, who once played alongside Darren Fletcher, also praised Tyler’s potential, comparing him favorably to his father and emphasizing the importance of harnessing his talent properly. Scotland will travel to Florida on Sunday with a warm-up match scheduled against Bolivia in New Jersey on June 6.
