During the celebrations marking Arsenal’s Premier League title win in north London, six individuals were stabbed and a total of 24 arrests were made, according to the Metropolitan Police. Although most victims of the stabbing incidents sustained minor injuries, one man in his twenties was seriously wounded in an attack on Hornsey Road just before 8:30 pm BST on Sunday. He was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition but is now reported to be stable.
The event drew hundreds of thousands of Arsenal supporters, and over 500 police officers were deployed to manage the large crowds. Despite these efforts, some officers sustained injuries during the festivities, with one suffering a slash wound to the hand and another struck on the head by thrown objects. The arrests included ten people suspected of assaulting police officers, three facing allegations of sexual assault, and one person detained on suspicion of grievous bodily harm related to an attack that caused a head injury.
The celebrations also saw significant disruption to property and safety concerns. Four police vans parked on Therberton Street in Islington were damaged, with dents and broken lights reported. Additionally, the London Fire Brigade had to rescue 75 fans who had climbed onto rooftops, prompting them to issue warnings against such dangerous behavior. Later in the evening, once most attendees had left, six separate stabbing incidents occurred. In response, police officers were granted extended stop and search powers overnight to help maintain order.
Commander Stuart Bell, who oversaw the Metropolitan Police’s public order operation for the parade, expressed gratitude towards the majority of fans for celebrating safely, stating, “I would like to thank the vast majority of the hundreds of thousands of Arsenal supporters who attended the day to celebrate safely and responsibly.” However, he noted that violence and criminality could not be tolerated, highlighting that officers had to intervene in acts of anti-social behavior and assaults against police personnel. Bell also mentioned that as the crowds dispersed, further violence, including gang-related incidents, took place but assured that officers responded swiftly to each stabbing and that investigations are ongoing
