A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years after killing his partner and detonating a gas explosion in their home. Clifton George, 45, fatally assaulted Annabel Rook, a mother of two, whom he attacked following her attempt to end their decade-long relationship. She was stabbed 31 times, after which George set a fire that triggered a destructive blast at their residence in Stoke Newington, north London, on 17 June 2025.

During the trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, George acknowledged charges of manslaughter and arson but denied murder, claiming a loss of control. Despite this, the jury convicted him of murder. Evidence presented depicted George as a volatile and abusive partner, prone to extreme anger over minor provocations. The explosion he caused resulted in approximately £400,000 worth of damage to the family home.

In sentencing George, Mr Justice Constable KC remarked on George’s dual nature, noting he could be warm and engaging but had “another troubling side” marked by intense rage and a “pronounced temper” easily triggered by perceived slights. Annabel Rook’s family described her as a devoted mother and caring individual who brought joy to many. Her father, Peter Rook, called her “one of the world’s life enhancers,” while her mother, Susanna Rook, tearfully described her as “optimistic, inclusive, and full of fun”.

The court also heard from friends and family who revealed the pattern of George’s abusive behavior. Rook’s close friend spoke of his “unreasonable flashing rage anger” and instances of gaslighting and fat-shaming. The evidence included incidents such as George storming off from the Glastonbury Festival after a disagreement and displaying fury over mundane matters like how his knives were dried. In the months before the murder, Rook had confided feelings of walking “on eggshells” and had expressed intent to end the relationship. Despite planning to provide George with financial support to move out, their last confrontation escalated violently after George learned he had no legal claim on the property, culminating in the fatal stabbing
