Northern Ireland’s First Minister, Michelle O’Neill, has condemned reports suggesting that police instructed nurses from minority backgrounds to show identification to masked individuals before entering their workplace. She described such incidents as “disgusting.” These claims have prompted calls for further investigation as concerns grow about the safety and treatment of healthcare workers amid recent unrest.
BBC News NI reached out to the police for a comment in response to O’Neill’s statements. While many protests in the area were peaceful, some were marred by racist violence. Healthcare professionals from abroad have reported feeling intimidated, with some expressing fears for their personal safety during these events.
At Stormont, O’Neill revealed that another political figure, Nesbitt, is also aware of allegations regarding nurses being told to show ID in these troubling circumstances. O’Neill has indicated her intention to discuss the issue with Chief Constable Jon Boutcher, emphasizing the need for a thorough and serious inquiry. She said, “If any health care worker was advised by police to show ID to masked men it was ‘vile and disgusting’ and there must be a ‘serious investigation.'”
O’Neill added, “No nurse or person going into their workplace should have to stop at any mob and give their ID – that’s absolutely disgraceful.” Stressing the urgency of clarifying the situation, she remarked, “I think we have to get to the bottom of whether or not that did happen.” She also mentioned that while the Chief Constable initially dismissed these claims, he later acknowledged that both she and the health minister had been informed of the incidents by staff members. Meanwhile, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed receiving reports of vehicles being stopped by masked individuals around greater Belfast.
