Jess Turnbull, a 19-year-old police officer, tragically lost her life after being injured while attending to a collision. Her parents, Janice and Andy Turnbull, expressed their profound grief, describing their daughter as “our greatest pride and our greatest joy”. They shared that Jess had joined Northumbria Police in September, following the path of her father. They recalled their “remarkable” daughter as someone who brought happiness and love into their lives every day, emphasizing the deep bond Jess shared especially with her mother. Jess’s energetic and determined nature was evident from a young age, along with her love for sports such as football and swimming. She also dedicated time to coaching children, inspiring them to enjoy and believe in the sport she cherished.
Jess had been in a relationship with her boyfriend, Dan, for a year, with the couple described as inseparable by her family. Her parents highlighted how proud she was to serve her community and wear her police uniform. They noted that policing was not merely a job for Jess but a true calling, driven by compassion and a strong desire to help others. Jess’s kindness, humor, and loyalty had touched many lives during her short life, and her infectious smile made those around her feel valued.
Authorities have arrested a 73-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving; he has since been released on bail. Northumbria’s Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine praised Jess as a dedicated officer who was committed to keeping communities safe. The Northumbria Police Federation also remembered her for the positive impression she made on colleagues through her professionalism and willingness to assist others.
