British Army to prepare for 'modern warfare' with £2bn AI training

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has revealed plans for a significant upgrade to British Army training through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and cutting-edge technology, backed by a £2 billion contract. This investment aims to equip soldiers with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of contemporary warfare. Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis recently confirmed the initiative during a visit to Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, where he observed the training and new equipment being used by troops.

Jarvis, who has a personal connection to Wiltshire from his time as an Army officer, emphasized the importance of this funding, which is set to create 270 jobs locally and provide support for 420 positions nationwide over the coming 15 years. He highlighted the need for realistic and modern training methods that keep pace with rapid technological advancements witnessed in conflict zones like Ukraine. “It is really important, given the rapid transformation and technology we are seeing in Ukraine and elsewhere, that our soldiers have the training to employ the kit they are going to need to be successful on the battlefield,” Jarvis explained.

The £2 billion program will train approximately 60,000 soldiers annually using AI-driven analytics, virtual environments, and simulation tools designed to enhance operational readiness. This advanced training system will enable troops to practice and prepare anywhere at any time, offering a more immersive experience that mirrors the demands of modern combat scenarios. Alongside this, the package includes the creation of 100 apprenticeships in partnership with Wiltshire College and the University of Staffordshire, covering roles from data analysis to project management.

The MoD stated that this new approach to training will significantly contribute to achieving its goals of increased Armed Forces readiness and ongoing transformation.
