Theo Burrell, an expert appraiser on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, has passed away at the age of 39 after a battle with brain cancer that lasted more than four years. Diagnosed in June 2022 with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain tumour typically associated with a life expectancy of 12 to 18 months, Burrell defied the odds through her strength and determination. She joined the Antiques Roadshow in 2018, bringing her expertise in ceramics and glass from her work with Lyon & Turnbull auctioneers in Edinburgh.
Her family shared on Instagram that she died peacefully surrounded by loved ones. The statement praised her courage and highlighted the milestones she experienced despite her diagnosis, such as her son’s first day of school and her wedding—events once thought unlikely to occur. The post emphasized how the support from the cancer community gave her comfort and hope during her darkest times, and expressed a wish that others could find hope in her story.
Burrell’s journey began after months of worsening symptoms, including headaches, vision problems, and severe migraines, which culminated in her hospital visit where the diagnosis shocked her. Following this, she underwent several treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, all aimed at extending her life. Open about her condition, she also confronted the emotional toll, admitting to having difficult thoughts but embracing precious moments with her family.
In addition to her personal struggle, Burrell became a passionate advocate for brain tumour research. She focused on raising awareness and campaigning for better government funding, faster diagnostics, and improved clinical trials. In 2023, she was named a patron of Brain Tumour Research, a charity dedicated to finding a cure. Dan Knowles, the charity’s chief executive, described her as “phenomenal, determined and truly inspiring,” noting that despite knowing her prognosis was terminal, she remained committed to making a difference for others facing the disease
