A recent court case has revealed a disturbing breach of trust by a funeral director who mishandled the remains of numerous deceased individuals and distributed incorrect ashes to grieving families. In March 2024, authorities raided Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, uncovering 35 bodies and over 100 sets of ashes stored improperly. Robert Bush, the owner of the funeral home, previously admitted to 67 offences, including 30 counts related to preventing lawful and respectful burials as well as thefts involving 12 charities.
The sentencing hearing at Hull Crown Court has exposed the shocking conditions within Bush’s funeral parlour, described by prosecutors as a “horror scene.” Families attending the five-day hearing reacted with gasps and tears as the court heard about bodies being discovered “on the racks” in cold storage, some found lying on the floor. Many of the remains were uncovered and in advanced stages of decomposition, including that of a stillborn baby. Prosecutor Chris Paxton KC emphasized that Bush had been entrusted by hundreds of families but had violated that trust in numerous ways, likening the scale of the offenses to an “industrial scale” of wrongdoing.
The extent of the misconduct came to light by chance when Bush, who was on holiday in the US, asked two other funeral directors to remove a body from a care home. Suspicious undertakers questioned a casual worker named Patrick Moore, who counted as many as 29 bodies stored at the Legacy premises, describing the scene as horrifying. The police were alerted by the undertakers and, upon searching the site, discovered a baby’s remains wrapped with wristbands indicating the child’s identity. The funeral home itself was found to be in a filthy state, with personal items such as flowers and cards discarded on the floor.
Following his arrest at Heathrow Airport soon after, Bush admitted to deceiving everyone, claiming his daughter was unaware of the situation. Many of the bodies recovered were those of elderly individuals, some waiting months or longer for cremation. The hearing has included heartrending statements from families, including Karen King, who said she felt violated after learning the ashes given to her were not those of her father. Others, such as Kathryn Howard and Byron Lill, described how the betrayal devastated them emotionally, with one witness recalling seeing her brother’s body left unattended, contrary to her understanding. The court also heard about the mismanagement of funeral fees and payments, revealing that Bush had received over £3 million during the period between 2017 and 2024 but used funds for personal gain rather than addressing the backlog of funerals.
