Pontardawe carer jailed for abusing 81-year-old woman in care home

An elderly woman suffering from dementia was subjected to appalling mistreatment by a carer, who has now been sentenced to prison. The disturbing abuse was captured on video, revealing Louise Harris verbally assaulting 81-year-old Elizabeth Anne Shipton at her residence in Pontardawe, Neath Port Talbot. In the footage, Harris was heard drunkenly shouting hateful remarks, including, “I hope you die in your sleep you… horrible cow.” The carer aggressively demanded to know where Elizabeth kept her money, even after the victim complained that Harris’s arm pressing on her chest was causing pain.

At Swansea Crown Court, Harris, aged 42, received a sentence of three months imprisonment, much to the dissatisfaction of Elizabeth’s family who argue that the punishment was insufficient. Elizabeth’s daughter, Tracy Faram Shipton, described her mother as “horrifically traumatised” and has lodged an appeal, asserting that the sentence was considerably too lenient. Tracy had known Harris for many years and had trusted her implicitly to care for her mother, having checked her qualifications in dementia care and other related training. She expressed her disbelief, saying, “I’ll never get my head around how she could do this.”

Tracy explained that her mother was in a particularly vulnerable state at the time of the incident, having recently endured a seven-week hospital stay due to sepsis and was coping with the loss of her husband, who she had been with since she was 16. Harris was hired through a Facebook advertisement for a temporary carer while waiting for social services care arrangements and was supposed to spend just four hours helping Elizabeth. Tracy was initially present for the first hour and thought Harris appeared competent and kind. However, soon after she left, Harris’s behaviour drastically changed; she became intoxicated, destroyed her mother’s knitting—the sole source of comfort for Elizabeth during her grieving period—and exhibited violent outbursts, including waving a large kitchen knife in the property.

When police arrived, they found Harris slumped on the floor and forced entry after viewing footage from the home security system, which Tracy had accessed to check on her mother’s well-being. Harris pleaded guilty to ill-treatment and criminal damage. The charge of attempted robbery, initially brought against her due to demands for money, was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service, a decision Tracy criticized, stating, “It beggars belief that they couldn’t see any physical assault there.” The judge acknowledged the gravity of Harris’s actions, calling them “heartless and cruel” with a “callous disregard” for Elizabeth’s dignity. However, sentencing guidelines limited the punishment, resulting in Harris serving just over a month in custody. The family continues to grapple with the aftermath, with Elizabeth now heavily sedated and unable to be left alone, haunted by vivid flashbacks of the abuse and reluctant to use emergency devices out of fear.
