Matthew Torbitt, who served as an advisor to Labour MP Christian Wakeford, has admitted to submitting fraudulent claims through the Parliamentary travel booking system. The offenses took place between August 2022 and September 2024, during which Torbitt claimed rail tickets that were not legitimately for Parliamentary use, according to statements at Thames Magistrates’ Court. Additionally, he acknowledged making a false claim for travel and accommodation expenses on 2 October 2024.
At 35 years old, Torbitt has recently been working as a political commentator and appears regularly on media outlets such as GB News, LBC, Sky News, BBC Newsnight, and Times Radio. During his court appearance, he was dressed in a navy blue suit and entered guilty pleas to two charges of fraud by false representation. The Prosecutor, Maisha Mannan, informed the court that the fraudulent claims exceeded £6,000, based on preliminary estimates from the Crown Prosecution Service, though the final amount is yet to be determined.
The case has been adjourned by District Judge Navneet Sher, who referred it to Snaresbrook Crown Court for sentencing at a date yet to be set. “It’s unlikely to be before four weeks, in any event,” the judge advised Torbitt. His advisory roles extended across Labour frontbenchers from 2018 through 2024, and an investigation was triggered following a Metropolitan Police report about unauthorized purchases made via the Parliamentary travel system.
Torbitt received his charge by postal requisition on 9 June. On a personal note, he is engaged to Sharon Gaffka, a women’s rights activist and former Love Island contestant from 2021. The couple recently celebrated the arrival of their baby boy earlier this month, as shared by Torbitt on his Instagram page
