I’ll never be myself again and that’s because of Robert Bush.”
Another victim, Kerry Webb, became tearful while describing how her mother, Julie Webb, was among the bodies found by police. She revealed that her mother had not been cremated as expected but was instead left in the parlour. It took the authorities seven weeks to confirm her identity. Kerry questioned, “How could someone be so cruel? Seven weeks of heartbreak, of not knowing if it was truly my mum inside that coffin, of not knowing what had happened to her body, of being terrified that somebody had hurt her.”
Details of Bush’s fraudulent activities were presented in court, revealing that he had delivered incorrect ashes to 46 families and provided none at all to 11 others. Prosecutor Chris Paxton KC explained the fraud’s financial impact, stating that Bush had deceived 226 people who paid for funeral plans, embezzling more than £550,000 over eleven years, with the total fraud amounting to £86,868. Among those affected was Shelley Chearman, who lost her husband Alan and confronted Bush by saying, “You fooled a lot of people in Hull with your mild manner, when in fact you are a cruel conman. You use people’s grief to fund your lifestyle.”
Paxton described the terrible condition of the funeral home where bodies were discovered “on the racks” inside a cold storage space and one was even found on a stretcher on the floor. Most remains were in various stages of decomposition, and the facility itself was characterized as filthy and poorly maintained. The 48-year-old Bush’s crimes came to light by chance while he was on holiday, following a tip-off to police by two other funeral directors.
