Greek authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Scottish woman whose body was discovered inside a suitcase. Elisabeth-Jane Ross, aged 38, was located in an abandoned building in Athens’ Kypseli neighborhood on 18 July. It is reported that a homeless individual stumbled upon the scene.
Ross is believed to have passed away approximately five to seven days prior to the body being found. Information suggests she arrived in Greece from Cyprus about two weeks before her death. A police spokesperson in Greece informed the BBC that toxicology test results are pending, which will help clarify the cause of death and whether any criminal activity was involved, as initial examinations did not provide definitive conclusions.
The discovery has prompted a response from Scottish authorities, with First Minister John Swinney expressing his concern and stating that the Scottish government, along with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, will offer support to Ross’s family. “This is an absolutely appalling case that has been reported overnight,” he said. “And obviously I’m deeply concerned that such a tragedy has taken place.”
Correspondent Helena Smith, reporting from Athens for The Guardian, described the location in Kypseli as an up-and-coming area popular among travelers and young expatriates, noting it is “full of Airbnbs.” Ross had familial ties to Edinburgh and connections within Greece, having stayed with a friend in Athens before she went missing. Smith also revealed that someone appeared to have had control over Ross’s mobile phone after her death, sending messages to mislead authorities and close contacts attempting to locate her. On Wednesday, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed they are providing consular assistance and cooperating with Greek officials, while Police Scotland is working with Greek authorities and supporting Ross’s family.
