Two more small boat pilots jailed for Channel crossings

Two men have been sentenced to prison for their roles in piloting overcrowded small boats across the English Channel, endangering the lives of many passengers. Omar Heidari, a 34-year-old Afghan national, was given a two-year prison term after steering a dinghy carrying 95 people to the UK in June. Meanwhile, Manas Yuk, an 18-year-old from Sudan, received 18 months in youth detention for piloting a boat with 81 passengers, including several children, only days earlier. Both men pleaded guilty to charges of endangerment and were sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on Friday.

The Home Office highlighted that Heidari’s actions put the greatest number of people in danger among all those prosecuted under the new legislation targeting those who pilot small vessels recklessly since the law’s introduction in January. During the crossing on June 23rd, the dinghy was severely overcrowded, with some passengers hanging their legs over the sides, and many were not wearing life jackets. Alongside the endangerment charge, Heidari was also convicted for entering the UK without valid entry clearance.

Yuk’s case drew particular concern because there were 13 children aboard the overcrowded boat he piloted just two days before Heidari’s crossing, and many of these children were not equipped with life jackets. After Border Security Command approached Yuk’s vessel, he attempted to conceal his identity but was later identified through drone footage and arrested. Anna Turley, a Home Office minister, stressed that the sentences demonstrate the government’s increasing efforts to combat dangerous smuggling networks, stating: “If you risk the lives of others by bringing illegal migrants to British shores on dangerous small boats, you will face justice.”

The Crown Prosecution Service noted that the small boats used for Channel crossings are often overcrowded and unfit for the journey, with passengers frequently not wearing life jackets. Since 2020, these small boat crossings have become the most common method of illegal entry into the UK. The court proceedings coincided with tragic news of four migrants dying off the coast of France while attempting similar crossings. On Thursday alone, three people were found dead near Dunkirk, and a fourth died in a separate incident some distance along the coast. This week recorded the busiest day of Channel crossings in 2024 so far, with 752 arrivals on Wednesday, bringing the year’s total to 14,128, which is still 42% lower than the same period last year
