Mountaineer Nirmal Purja killed in Pakistan avalanche, his company says

Nirmal Purja, a distinguished mountaineer and former soldier of the British Army, tragically lost his life in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, according to a statement released by his company. Elite Expeditions announced the devastating news on social media, expressing deep sorrow and heartbreak over Purja’s passing during the avalanche on Thursday.

The company also confirmed that none of the other nine members of the climbing expedition survived the fatal incident. Purja, originally from Nepal, had gained worldwide recognition in 2019 for his extraordinary achievement of summiting the world’s 14 highest mountains in just over six months.

Authorities in Pakistan reported that they had recovered the bodies of three climbers from the group: American Mallory Geis, Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy from Oman, and Pur Bahadur Gurung from Nepal. These climbers were part of the ten-person team caught in the deadly avalanche.
