Greek authorities have reported that a man has confessed to the killing of a Scottish woman whose remains were discovered inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in Athens. The victim, Elisabeth-Jane Ross, aged 38, was found in the Kypseli district on July 18, shortly after she had been reported missing.
Following her disappearance, officers from Greece worked closely with law enforcement officials from the US, the UK, and Scotland in order to investigate the case. As a result, a 26-year-old man, believed to be of Afghan origin, was taken into custody. He was brought to police headquarters where he admitted responsibility for the crime. The suspect faces charges including manslaughter, robbery, and weapons offenses, although the exact legal accusations are still being determined within the Greek judicial system.
Investigators explained that Elisabeth-Jane, also known to her family as Lisa, arrived in Greece on June 26 and initially stayed in the Piraeus area until July 10. She then traveled to an unspecified location within Attica. Upon reviewing surveillance footage and conducting inquiries, police linked the man to the incident. It is alleged that he transported Lisa’s body in a suitcase to the abandoned building where she was ultimately found and later used her bank cards to withdraw cash. Officers also discovered and confiscated replica firearms and a knife during searches of the suspect’s residence.
Lisa had been living in Keratsini, about 6 miles west of central Athens, where she stayed with Greek friends. She reportedly told them on July 15 she planned to go to Kypseli to meet “American friends” or acquaintances who were also reportedly residing there. Greek police have indicated they are expediting toxicology tests to determine the precise cause of her death, with results expected within a few days. However, they noted that forensic analysis timelines may vary considerably depending on the case complexity. In addition to this, authorities are trying to locate the American friends Lisa mentioned. The situation has drawn the attention of Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, who described the case as “absolutely appalling.”
