Footballer Ivan Toney charged with assault at Soho nightclub

Ivan Toney, the English footballer currently playing for Saudi Pro League team Al-Ahli, has been formally charged with assault following an incident in central London. The 30-year-old was charged on July 31 in connection with an event that occurred on December 6 on Wardour Street in Soho.

Toney, who featured prominently for England during last month’s World Cup, including starting in the dramatic 6-4 victory over France in the third-place playoff, is accused of assault causing actual bodily harm. He is scheduled to attend Westminster Magistrates’ Court on September 24 to address the charges against him.

A representative for Toney released a statement saying, “Ivan acknowledges the charge and although he is naturally shocked, he looks forward to being given the opportunity to clear his name in court.” This comes amid what has been a significant chapter in the striker’s career.

Beginning his professional journey at Northampton Town, Toney went on to represent Newcastle, Peterborough, and Brentford before his move to Saudi Arabia in 2024. While he was a somewhat unexpected choice for the England World Cup squad, his involvement included starting against France and making a brief appearance as a substitute during England’s 2-1 semi-final loss to Argentina
