The owners of Heathrow Airport have put forward a proposal to expand its capacity, aiming to handle up to 150 million passengers annually. The airport emphasized the strong justification for this growth, stating that “the case for expansion has never been clearer.”
Heathrow also highlighted that their expansion plans are designed to provide the necessary infrastructure to keep the country competitive on a global scale while supporting significant economic growth. They believe that enhancing the airport’s facilities will deliver long-term benefits to the national economy.
In 2025, Heathrow saw a total of 84.46 million passengers pass through its terminals. The airport reported that 19 July was the busiest day of the year so far, coinciding with the start of the summer holiday period for many schools, when it handled 267,000 travelers. Additionally, the airport noted the arrival of several new airlines last month, showing strong demand for access to Heathrow.
Last month, it was announced that Heathrow will have the ability to increase charges to airlines. This move is intended to help the airport recoup the costs incurred during the initial phases of its third runway development project
