The University of Cambridge has confirmed that it will undertake an independent inquiry concerning Jason Arday’s appointment and his tenure at the institution. This review will be led by senior academics both from within Cambridge and from other institutions and is set to begin “as soon as possible,” according to the university’s vice-chancellor.
Jason Arday, who stepped down last week from his position as a professor of sociology of education at Cambridge, is facing allegations related to plagiarism as well as scrutiny regarding some of his accomplishments. Arday, who was appointed as Cambridge’s youngest black professor in 2023 at the age of 41, has denied the plagiarism claims. He has also spoken out about the intense public scrutiny and personal attacks that followed these allegations.
In addressing university staff, Professor Deborah Prentice acknowledged the “anger and anxiety around this damaging and difficult case” and expressed that these concerns were shared both within Cambridge and beyond. She emphasized the important role played by staff members of color, praising their scholarship, achievements, and valuable contributions to the institution and the broader academic community.
Professor Prentice further stressed that this particular case should not be interpreted as undermining the work or legitimacy of Cambridge’s staff of color. The outcomes of the investigation will play a key role in a forthcoming review of the university’s procedures for appointing senior academic positions, a process the university announced prior to this latest development
